Emotional Wellbeing
From the very moment of our birth, we are taught to look outside of ourselves for happiness and fulfillment. We have been conditioned to believe that in order to be happy we must accomplish, acquire and succeed. We learn quickly that our very sense of self comes from external circumstances — from positions, possessions and power. As we grow older we realize that no amount of money, status, material possessions or love from another individual can satisfy the longing we all seek to fill. Even if these commodities do provide temporary respite, they are fleeting and certain to fade with time. To gain true emotional freedom, we must learn to look within.
What are emotions?
Emotions are energy in motion. While emotions can sometimes feel permanent, energy has a unique capacity to be moved, tansformed and released. This is why it’s so imperative we learn skills for working with our emotions — so that we can process and release emotional toxicity from past experiences.
Emotions are derived directly from needs. When our needs are met, we experience a sense of tranquility and wellbeing that pervades every moment. When our needs are not met, we experience feelings of fear, anger, pain and sadness. If these emotions are repressed, their energetic residue is stored in the body, resulting in more chronic feelings of depression, anxiety, guilt or hostility.
Every criticism, judgment, diagnosis, and expression of anger is the tragic expression of an unmet need.
- Marshall Rosenberg
When we carry repressed negative emotions with us, the flow of energy becomes static, and both our health and present relationships can suffer. We may find ourselves projecting old patterns and beliefs onto people we love, allowing past emotional imprinting to create separation and dissonance in our present relationships. Learning to work skillfully with your emotions will allow you to release the energy of the past and create space for more joy and fulfillment in your life.
